SheepShaver is pretty good right now but has a few issues. From there it was a short trip to Apples website, where I downloaded ROM. If MacOnLinux is ever ported properly to G5s running OS X, it will be a much better solution for old games than Classic is. solution is emulation, and the best PowerPC Mac emulator is SheepShaver.

However, you still need a copy of Mac OS and a PowerMac ROM image to use this program. That is, it enables you to run PowerPC Classic Mac OS software on your computer, even if you are using a different operating system.

Maybe someday.Īpple isn't going to update Classic so people can play old games.they have better things to do, but they could for sure have done better if they thought it was important enough. SheepShaver is an Open Source PowerPC Mac OS run-time environment. There's an OS X version of MacOnLinux, but it doesn't work with G5s and wasn't completely ported anyway. Though due to hardware issues I don't think I can use a joystick so I'm stuck with the mouse. System Shock seems perfect though.) MacOnLinux is another emulator that works on LinuxPPC machines, and it plays TIE Fighter perfectly. (SheepShaver apparently has some problems with the way X-Wing and TIE Fighter display graphics, so it's pretty slow. Well, they run under Classic, but the screen is never updated so you can't actually play them. All of which do run with SheepShaver but not Classic, not with any recent version of OS X anyway.

A number of old games don't run under Classic because they used "tricks" to open displays in a slightly non-standard way, so they don't work under Classic.

They could have included more compatible graphics drivers, for another thing. On my LinuxPPC machine running SheepShaver (the Linux version does have real CD-ROM support), for example, Majesty plays the music just fine, but under Classic there's no music because of no CDDA support. (Dunno about the demo, don't have it.) SheepShaver is an emulator that does have real CD-ROM support.though not for the OS X version currently. SheepShaver runs with varying degree of functionality on the following systems: Unix with X11 (Linux i386/x8664/ppc, NetBSD 2.x, FreeBSD 3. If you're planning to run SheepShaver on a PowerMac, you probably already have these two items. Without it, Settlers II doesn't recognize that the CD is in the drive, and won't run. However, you still need a copy of MacOS and a PowerMac ROM image to use SheepShaver. They could have included real CD-ROM support, for one thing.
